Pesticide Industry to Use Tax Dollars to Attack Critics

0comments
WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 --

The California Department of Food and Agriculture has awarded $180,000 in federal funds to finance an agribusiness-chemical industry plan to combat its critics – Environmental Working Group and other health, consumer and organic farming advocates who have campaigned against overuse of pesticides on food crops.
The Alliance for Food and Farming (AFF), a Watsonville, California, trade association representing more than 50 large produce growers and marketers and pesticide and fertilizer suppliers, is slated for a slice of California’s $17.5 million share of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crops Block Grant program, which Congress set up in 2004 to improve “efficiency, productivity and profitability” in farming of vegetables, fruits, nuts and flowers. The 2008 farm bill expanded the specialty crops program, mandating that USDA distribute $55 million in state block grants in 2010, and the same for 2011 and 2012, to advance “buy local” campaigns and other efforts to make produce, nuts and flower crops more competitive.
California officials announced last Friday (Sept. 17) that the Alliance for Food and Farming would receive $180,000 to “correct the misconception that some fresh produce items contain excessive amounts of pesticide residues.” The state press release added that the grant would go to rebut “claims by activist groups about unsafe levels of pesticides [that] have been widely reported in the media for many years, but have largely gone uncontested. … The goal is to generate more balanced media reporting and change public perception about the safety of produce when it comes to pesticide residues.”

Last July, the Alliance for Food and Farming attacked Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) influential “Shopper’s Guide To Pesticides In Produce,” introduced more than a decade ago to advise consumers about high concentrations of pesticide residues in conventional produce.

“This grant is a slap in the face of California’s rapidly-advancing organic agriculture sector,” said Ken Cook, president and founder of Environmental Working Group. “While conventional produce has seen demand stagnate, organics are enjoying dynamic growth. The state should think twice about using U.S. taxpayers’ money to attempt to give chemical-dependent industrial farming a competitive edge over organics.”
“The block grant program supports some initiatives that we believe are worthwhile,” Cook said. “But the grant in question shows how a good program can be distorted. I think most taxpayers would say this is exactly the kind of thing they don’t want their money spent on. It ends up going to serve the agribusiness agenda. If these well-heeled corporate farming interests want to talk people out of buying organic or low-pesticide food, they ought to spend their own money to do it.”

Over the past decade, organic fruit and vegetable sales have soared from 3 percent of the retail produce market in the U.S. in 2000 to nearly 11 percent last year, to $9.5 billion. According to surveys by the Organic Trade Association, organic produce’s precipitous trajectory barely slowed when the global financial crisis took hold in late 2008. The stunning gains make a sharp contrast to the otherwise lackluster market for conventional fruits and vegetables in recent years.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS) reports that Americans’ per capita annual consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables has been roughly flat for the past two decades. U.S. vegetable consumption has slumped slightly, according to USDA, to 92.2 pounds per person per year in 2008, from an all-time peak of 101 pounds in 1999.

According to the Pesticide Action Network of North America, an advocacy group that compiles data on pesticide use, in 2008 California growers deployed 161 million pounds of pesticides on all crops. They used 53 million pounds of pesticides on crops whose growers comprise the Alliance for Food and Farming: head lettuce, leaf lettuce, celery, spinach, tomatoes, avocados, table and raisin grapes, wine grapes, peaches and strawberries.

According to public records examined by EWG the Alliance for Food and Farming is chaired by Matt McInerney, executive vice president of Western Growers Association, an Irvine, Calif., based organization of large California and Arizona farmers.
California officials last week awarded the Western Growers Association two grants totaling $942, 278 to create a website and other communications activities to promote specialty crops.
Last July, the Alliance for Food and Farming set up a web site and press webinar to attack EWG’s Pesticide Guide, contending that there is “no scientific evidence” that a small amount of pesticide residue on food “represents any health risk.”

According to EWG’s reviews of public record, the Alliance board is comprised of:
Richard L. Peterson – Executive director, California Dried Plum Board
Matt McInerney – Executive vice president, Western Growers Association
Jim Howard – Vice president, California Table Grape Commission
Rick Tomlinson – Director of government affairs, California Strawberry Commission
Ed Beckman – President, California Tomato Farmers; former President of CA Tomato Commission

Study Suggests a Diabetes Risk Even at ‘Acceptable’ Exposure Levels

People living in areas where air quality levels were near, but still below, the acceptable safety limits of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had a more than 20% higher diabetes prevalence than people exposed to fewer air pollutants.Oct. 1, 2010 -- New research shows a strong link between diabetesrates and exposure to auto exhaust, industrial smoke, and other types of fine particulate air pollution.
The link persisted even after researchers factored in the impact of known diabetes risk factors such as obesity, race, and sedentary lifestyle.
The study does not prove air pollution exposure contributes to diabetes risk, but it is the first large-scale, national study to explore a possible link.
“We know exposure to air pollution is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease,” says John Brownstein, PhD, of the Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. “This is just one more piece of evidence that pollution impacts health.”

Air Pollution Levels

Brownstein and colleagues combined county-by-county EPA data on fine particulate air pollution levels with nationwide diabetes figures from the CDC during 2004 and 2005. Obesity rates for specific areas, as well as population density, ethnicity, income, education, and health insurance coverage were measured using data from the CDC and the U.S. Census Bureau.
As expected, a strong relationship was seen between obesity rates in a given area and diabetes prevalence.
But the analysis also showed a strong and consistent association between diabetes rates and air pollution levels.
The study appears in the October issue of Diabetes Care.
“The most disturbing thing was that this was seen even in areas where pollution levels were considered acceptable by the EPA,” says study co-researcher Allison B. Goldfine, MD, of Harvard Medical School’s Joslin Diabetes Center.
In counties that did not exceed the EPA’s limits for fine particulate air pollution, those with the highest pollution levels had a more than 20% increase in diabetes prevalence after taking into account obesity rates and other known risk factors for the disease.
“The findings don’t prove air pollution is involved in the diabetes epidemic, but they suggest a role for environmental factors other than those related to what we typically think of as our Western lifestyle,” Goldfine tells WebMD.

The ‘Agent Orange’ Experience

In animal studies, chronic inflammation has been shown to promote insulinresistance, which leads to diabetes. Chemicals in air pollution have been linked to inflammation.
This link may be stronger in obese people, the researchers suggest, because many chemicals accumulate in fat.
“Obesity may play a critical permissive role in priming the body for pollution-induced inflammation and disordered metabolism,” they write.
American Diabetes Association Vice President of Medicine and Science Vivian Fonseca, MD, notes that there is precedent for the idea that chemical exposures increase diabetes risk.
Following the Vietnam War, many veterans exposed to the chemical dioxin through the widely used defoliant Agent Orange claimed the exposure caused their diabetes.
In 2000, the Veteran’s Administration added type 2 diabetes to the list of “presumptive” diseases associated with the herbicide exposure. The American Diabetes Association characterizes the evidence linking Agent Orange with diabetes as “modest.”
“This study is thought provoking, but it is certainly not definitive,” Fonseca tells WebMD. “It makes sense that exposure to air pollution might play a role in diabetes, but more research is needed to prove it.”

American Psychiatric Association Issues Suggestions on Medication and Talk Therapy

severely depressed woman
Oct. 1, 2010 -- Updated guidelines for the treatment of clinical depression include suggestions on the use of medication, talk therapy, exercise, and alternative treatments, while urging doctors to more closely assess symptoms and tailor treatments to the patient.
The American Psychiatric Association released the guidelines on major depressive disorder Friday, the first update in 10 years.
Before the release of the new guidelines, an independent panel of depression treatment experts with no ties to industry reviewed the guidelines for any bias, says Joel Yager, MD, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, and chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s steering committee on practice guidelines.
The final document, Yager tells WebMD, is a ''verification and validation of the best way to treat depression." The group took five years to research and create the guidelines, Yager says.
Nearly one in 10 U.S. adults has depression, the CDC reported this week. About 3.4% of those meet the criteria for major depression, the type addressed in the guidelines.

Guidelines at a Glance

Yager recapped some of the highlights of the guidelines for WebMD.
''For mild to moderate depression, talking therapy -- in particular cognitive behavior therapy and interpersonal therapy -- can help reduce the symptoms of depressionand prepare people not to be so vulnerable for future depression," Yager says. "There's also good evidence that modern antidepressants are effective as well."
"For more serious cases of depression, there is evidence that the medications really matter," he says. ''Talking therapy can be additionally helpful, but if you have a serious depression the odds are you are going to require these medications."

Specifics of Depression Treatment Guidelines

The new guidelines address depression that resists traditional treatment, suggesting that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has the best supporting data. In ECT, electric currents are passed through the brain to change brain chemistry and help ease symptoms.
"Electroconvulsive therapy has been around a long time," Yager says. "The evidence [for its effectiveness] remains strong for very serious depression that doesn't respond."
He likens ECT to putting paddles on the chest for heart emergencies. "Paddles on the brain will bring you back," he says.
For resistant depression, the guidelines also address other potential treatments, including older medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOIs) as well as two newer options: transcranial magnetic stimulation (the use of magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain and relieve symptoms) and vagus nerve stimulation (the use of electrical impulses in the brain).
Exercise is addressed as a way to see a modest improvement in mood symptoms, with either aerobic exercise or resistance training a help. "It pumps you up a little bit, makes you feel not as ineffective," Yager says.
Under the guidelines, doctors are also urged to rate their patients' symptoms more specifically than they may do now.
